What Is Robotic-Assisted Surgery?

Robotic surgery, like laparoscopic surgery, uses specialized tools attached to a robotic arm that can fit through tiny incisions. With robotic surgery, surgeons sit at the console and direct tiny instruments that mimic hand movements but with a greater range of motion and precision. The robotic arms allow surgeons to make small cuts and insert the instruments (endoscope) into the surgery site. The endoscope is attached to a thin tube with a camera that provides surgeons with three-dimensional (3D) images of the surgical area while performing the procedure.

The surgical system also provides surgeons with highly magnified, 3D, high-definition images of the surgical site.

The da Vinci surgical system consists of the following:

Surgeon console - an enclosure where your surgeon sits and controls the instruments guided by a high-definition view of your anatomy
Patient cart - a piece of equipment positioned along the patient's bedside that holds the camera and instruments that your surgeon controls from the console
Vision cart - a machine that links the other two components and supports the 3D high-definition system
